Why Sentence Diagramming?

Sentence diagram was developed over 160 years ago (see the early diagram show on the right) and was commonly used in schools until rigorous grammar education was dropped as an educational priority.

Diagramming has numerous benefits:

  • Putting all the words of a sentence on a diagram forces learners to identify logical connections between parts of a sentence.
  • Creates better writers
  • Helps students see connections between style and thought thereby creating more complex writing
  • Helps clarify thinking
  • Greater appreciation for language
  • Learn structures and patterns of language
  • Keeps our brains working to assemble the “puzzle” of a diagram

Improve Comprehension

Writers have commonly used aphorisms to help impart values and common sense (A penny saved is a penny earned, etc.). In this grammar course, we use wit and wisdom from writers ranging from Benjamin Franklin, Mark Twain, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Kahil Gibran, and Booker T. Washington.

As you discover the architecture of the English language, you will start to notice the rhetorical elements of our great writers. Diagramming helps to better understand literature or any complex writing.

Denise Tanyol

Denise has taught English at the University of Pennsylvania Writing and Literature department. She received her B.A. from the Writing Seminar at the Johns Hopkins University and her M.A. from the Center for Writers at the University of Southern Mississippi. Her doctoral dissertation at the University of Pennsylvania, “The Inconstant Machine: Photography and American Literature,” concerns American writers’ often conflicted encounters with the camera, in particular their responses to changes in technology and practice. She has published papers on Melville, Joyce, and Faulkner.

Sean Selinger

Sean has been working with educational technology since 1999. His company, Testing Technologies, licenses test software to universities (such as Baruch College, University of Iowa, University of British Columbia, and University of Athens) and test prep schools worldwide. His free educational products have helped more than 1 million students. He is a graduate of Cornell University and studied English literature.

Lori Denise

Lori is a former opera singer who graduated from Stanford University with a degree in International Relations. Lori started a K-12 private Christian school called Valeo Academy and was Executive Director for three years. Her voice is used in many of the course videos.

Ann Fontanella

Ann graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and studied at Yale University’s graduate school of music. She has toured nationwide as a violin soloist and has been teaching violin classes online for over 8 years. She is currently a home school mother in Pennsylvania.
